Scow Spring Series 2022 – Race 2 Report & Announcements
Scow Spring Series 2022 – Race 2
It was another beautiful day on the river last Saturday. We had fourteen scows and four paws on the start line and it was so good to see some of our junior members out on the water too, learning the ropes, working the jibs.
RACE 2 REPORT from Eric Williams: What a perfect day again on the Beaulieu River, sunny with a gentle S.E. wind. The course was excellent and created lots of place changes with a few holes and wind shifts to make it really interesting. Martin Sellars and his daughter Pippa made a perfect start and never lost the lead. Jay Devonshire and Eric Williams second and third round the windward mark, tried hard to catch them but had no answer and watched them lengthen their lead to the finish. Eric finished second and Jay third. Victoria and Edward Bonham Carter sailed a good race to finish in fourth. Lizzie Anders took fifth after a poor start, making a clever move to pick up a good shift and get past several boats on the second round. I think Tana Lester had a third crew but can’t remember his name. He had a curly coat and a long tail; great to see him and I understand he doesn’t like getting wet! Well done again Martin and Pippa. Martin is a top international Tornado catamaran and dinghy sailor so we are going to have to work hard to catch him. Lastly thank you so much to the race team and all the volunteers for giving us all a most enjoyable race.
Thank you to our volunteers: Gerry, June and Cassie on shore and Andrew and Nick Burge on Safety Duty. Many thanks also to Jay who, before the race, valiantly spent 2 hours buoyancy testing all our boats with a rather wonderful ‘Heath Robinson‘ contraption lent to us by the Scow Association.
Heartfelt thanks to Sara Steele and her Bignalls boathouse team for laying on the most delicious spread and looking after us so well. It was a treat.

DATE FOR THE DIARY – TRAINING MORNING – 7th May 10.00
Training morning with Oli Stanley on-shore and Jay Devonshire off-shore including VHF radio usage, starting platform procedure, ‘how to right a Scow’ and the correct way to pull someone out of the water and into the safety boat. It’s not easy. Oli and Jay are extremely accomplished and experienced sailors and we greatly appreciate them passing on their knowledge and expertise. Don’t miss this great opportunity! Please let me know if you’d like to attend.
Yours aye,
Victoria Bonham Carter
