Newtown Creek Rally Report and Details of Next Race
NEWTOWN CREEK RALLY – Reports from Natasha and Pippa Sellars
With ten boats – seven Scows, three Lasers – we had a nice northerly breeze all the way from Needs Ore to Newtown, on a run across the solent. Following Andrew Duncan with his yellow and black sail, we kept cruising along with a firm breeze filling our sails. Finally we arrived, and beached ourselves on the banks of the creek.
I think everyone enjoyed some fun in the sun over lunchtime, a few of us even went for a dip in the water! There were games of boules and frisbee, and lots of sunbathing.
Setting off again, at about three o-clock, we tacked upwind and out into the solent. Then we were hit by an unexpected wind change, swinging round from northerly to south-westerly. This meant we had another run up to the river mouth! On entering the river, we started to travel upwind. The wind picked up a bit, against the tide, so it was very choppy. What a lovely day for an outing. By Natasha, aged 9
On Saturday we did a nice little trip in scows and lasers over from Need’s Ore to Newtown with a breeze in our sails. We were following Andrew Duncan with a very distinctive black and yellow sail and a black hull (It looked a bit like a bee).
I think everyone enjoyed some fun in the sun on the banks of Newtown creek, some of us played boule and frisbee, we even went SWIMMING! Some of us were sunbathing on the beach or playing after lunch. We set off at 3:00, me and Martin were the last to set off but we managed to catch up.
When we came back we were being hit by an unexpected wind change, swinging round from Northerly to South-Westerly. Most of the way back we had waves crashing onto our boats, some people were being frothed about and splashed in their boats. When we were going upwind back to the club house, some people out of the seven of us were sitting on the edge of the boat. IT WAS VERY WINDY! We got back by about 4:30. By Pippa, aged 7
