Race Report by Jay Devonshire
With a Westerly direction, at times gusty, the 10 strong fleet started in a light and shifty breeze, first to catch a good puff was Cleo crewed by Red, and they were never headed in the shifty beat to A, and extended their lead thereafter. The followers battled to E and back to A via D and C . Jay led the bunch from E but omitted D and had to return, dropping to 4th , behind Mike and the Morgans, but recovering to 2nd rounding A for the long leg to Brickyards, closely followed by John and Lindy, and Mike Doherty.
From the jetty, the finishers were treated to the spectacle of Mary sitting on her capsized Scow across the river, having been hit by the most vicious gust of the race. Somehow she had managed to stay dry, and after some camera work, June and Cassie disentangled the mast from the river bed, and righted the Scow, Mary remaining dry !
Very well done to Cleo (and Red) with a fine win, proving that there is no substitute for hours on the water, having honed her skills over 60 miles around the Isle of Wight.
We enjoyed tasty refreshments on the lawn , generously provided by Christoph and Sarah, who had to absent themselves at short notice, leaving everything ready for Fiona and Frances to serve. Our thanks to all the catering team which makes these “destination races” such an enjoyable part of our program. Also a thank you to Mary for providing the entertainment factor.
