Scow Spring Series 2022 – Race 3 Reminder and Racing Rules

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday for Race 3, at 1130. Hopefully we will have enough wind to get a decent race. Last week’s Race 2 ‘Race Report’ is now posted on the website, link here: https://brsc.site/scow-spring-…

Now that the racing is well underway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to remind ourselves of the some racing rules for starting. Whilst these may not entirely conform to the RYA Rules, these are the standing instructions for the BRSC. Oli Stanley will be covering starting rules plus mark rounding/overtaking rules during our training morning on 7th May. Please email me to sign up.

ONE MINUTE RULE PENALTY

If any part of a boat is over the line within one minute of the start then this boat is required to perform a 360 degree turn as soon after the start as is practicable and without compromising any other boat or obstructing anyone’s course. The boat will be disqualified if the turn is not undertaken.

OVER THE LINE AT THE START PENALTY

If any part of a boat is over the line at the moment of the race start, then this boat must return and re-cross the line, avoiding the rest of the fleet and with no right-of-way privileges (not even starboard over port). It may not be possible to safely turn around immediately without compromising other boats, so the infringing helm must time their return carefully. Boats not redeeming their penalties will be disqualified.

DON’T TRY TO GET AWAY WITH IT! Our racing is self-policing. If you know, or suspect, you have infringed either/both or these rules then don’t wait to be told. Take it upon yourself to pay the relevant penalty even if you’re not sure of your infringement. This is simply fair play. After the race inform the Starting Platform of your actions.

LISTEN OUT Communication is key. In the case of any infringements the platform will be conveying information to the relevant helms but sometimes it is difficult to get messages across clearly. During the starting sequence and in the initial minutes of the race please listen out for the loudhailer and/or calls from the safety boat. And also observe any penalty flags that may be flying.
